A convergence of Technology
Throughout history, major advances in civilization have corresponded with the maturing of sufficient technology to enable doing things that have never been possible or doing them in new and better ways. We have arrived at such a juncture in history.
Computers managing multiple Vehicles
To help understand where the technology currently is, imagine hundreds of drones orchestrated in a light show. Here is an example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44KvHwRHb3A
Autonomous Vehicles
Self-driving vehicles have become a reality. The highway scenario has fewer issues than city driving. So now imagine a chain of vehicles working in unison with computers providing intelligence about the right of way conditions. The right of way management system will provide instant instructions for the chain to slow down if necessary and each vehicle in the chain will react instantly as if it was a single vehicle.
This will allow vehicles to reduce separation and benefit from drafting. It’s a win win win. Greater speed, improved efficiency, and more effective use of infrastructure.
Communications
We are at the point where 100% reliable communications between vehicles and management software is a reality.
Right-0f-way Acquisition
With modern tunneling technology, cities and many natural and man-made obstructions can be avoided eliminating issues in some of the most congested areas.
Electrical Power
Small, factory built modular nuclear power is on the drawing board. An order for dozens of units to power a transportation corridor from the East to the West coast would bring this technology to fruition.
